Teens love this movie as it's sort of a modern day spin off of Save the Last Dance. A boy raised in the hood and raised in the foster care system hangs with his friend who steals cars with his little brother and does other things that people on the streets do. They see the high end private dance school in the heart of New York where they live and decide to go after the little brother who broke in. Being resentful as they think most these kids get everything handed to them on a silver platter, they vandalize the stage that is where they are to perform. When the brothers run as the cops come, he is left to take the rap and is sentenced to community service. His eyes fall to a girl who is a Senior at the school.

He sees how she can dance. She's dating someone else at the time and her dance partner is out due to injuries. He offers to fill in saying he can lift her as others try and fail. While doing community service and helping this somewhat elite dancer, he finds that he doesn't have much time for his friends from the street who are growing mad with him. When the other dance partner comes back after the dancer and the he started dating, he realizes that this isn't for him.

He can never dance like them even though he loves what he is doing. The girl even tried to fight so that he can use the dance as his audition to get into the school. He finds though that not everyone there has money. He learns that some of them were raised in the hood like he. Some even right near where he was raised. On a night of a party that the three attended, the little brother wanted to prove that he was just as cool as his brother and the guy doing all the dancing.

He tries to steal the car of a gang member. Rival gang members see him in the car as he was getting out after going for a small joy ride around the block and shot him.

The brother of the younger brother finds that he hasn't done much with his life when his brother died. His mother quit talking to him. It occured to him that there was more to life than the streets. It sinks in to the one who had the chance to dance to.
